Sydney Chinese New Year Festival 2009

Sydney’s 2009 Chinese New Year Festival welcomed the Year of the Ox. The City of Sydney produced Festival runs from 23 January - 15 February 2009.  More than 600,000 people attend the Festival annually, making it one of Sydney’s fastest growing and most popular events.

Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival kicks off

Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival kicks off in Belmore Park on Friday with a weekend packed with music and dance, food and gift stalls and activities for all the family.

Make a wish at the God of Wealth shrine, check out the talent at Chinese Pop Idol, learn how to cook simple Chinese fare, try your hand at Tai Chi, lantern making or Mah Jong, watch acrobats, traditional dances and martial arts, pick up a gift, and taste food from all over Asia. Belmore Park will be decked out with hanging red and gold lanterns, and a giant Ox lantern to welcome the Year of the Ox.


Sydney Festival First Night

All of Sydney was invited to dance in the streets to mark the opening of Sydney Festival 2009. An estimated crowd of 300,000 people flocked to the city to enjoy an epic afternoon and night of music and dance for the Festival First Night extravaganza.
